Japanese Favorite: Izakaya Kikufuji

My family is very fond of holding small get-togethers to celebrate a special occasion by having family dinners. One thing’s for sure; if we can’t think of any restaurant to have dinner in, we always come back to one place: Izakaya Kikufuji. We never get tired of its service, ambiance, and most especially their food. For a reasonable price, it has become me and my family’s favorite go-to restaurant.

Izakaya Kikufuji is located in Little Tokyo, Makati. Even if there are several Japanese restaurants near the area, we just can’t help but go back to this place. One dish that we have always been ordering is the Spicy Tuna Maki (Php 240). I hate spicy food. Yes, hate is a strong word, but that’s really how I feel towards it. Although, even if I cannot stand any hint of spice, this might be an exception. It just tastes that good. Definitely a must-try!

Their Tonkatsu (Php 205) would also be recommended. It might not be as special as the Katsu’s you see in other specialty restaurants, but it’s good enough. It’s not dry and it’s cooked just right. It comes with mashed potato and lettuce.

Generally, a Japanese favorite would be Tempura (Php 205), so you definitely cannot miss out on this one. It has 4 pieces of this flour-coated shrimp. Their Ebi Tempura should also be one of the dishes that’s on your table.

Something new to our table would be the Seafood Teppanyaki (Php 245). Most of my relatives love this newly discovered dish. Even I do too. It’s served on a sizzling plate with shrimp, squid, and some vegetables. Its taste is well-balanced and there’s no dominant flavor that could ruin the dish.

Other orders:

  • Chicken Teriyaki (Php 168)

One of the staples of Japanese cuisine. Their Chicken Teriyaki is also a must-try since it is a well-known Japanese dish.

  • Kushi Yaki

My personal favorite. Order this for me and I’ll be good. These are the ones that you see are on sticks. There are many kinds of Kushi Yaki’s, but my favorite is the Gyu Kushi (Php 125). You might get shocked by the price because it’s Php 125 for one stick on 4 beef cubes. But can I just say, it is really worth a try. These cubes just melt in your mouth. I love it so much.

  • Special Tuna Maki

We only discovered this recently, but it’s kind of a Spicy Tuna Maki Upgrade. It’s California Maki served with spicy tuna sashimi and mangoes on top. It might be hard to eat cause each piece is big, but it’s really worth it.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE:

There’s a reason why this would be our favorite. It’s not only because of the food, but it’s also because of the service and the location. The restaurant has a nice Japanese feel to it. They do not charge the use of their private rooms. Most of the time, the restaurant is really jam-packed, so make sure you have a reservation. They have a smoking area,  that’s where we usually sit, but it doesn’t really feel like a smoking area because it is still air conditioned. Don’t worry, it doesn’t smell like cigarettes too. Their service is not slow either. Even if they don’t have wifi, it really is a good place to keep coming back to.
